Dear Prospective Parent,

During the summer of 2012, the North Carolina General Assembly created the new Special Education Scholarship Grants program to provide school choice options for special needs students in North Carolina. This program replaces and expands the Special Needs Tax Credit program from 2011.

The scholarships were available beginning in the 2014 spring semester for children entering kindergarten or first grade, students transferring from a public school to a private school, and students who were already participating in the Special Needs Tax Credit Program. This grant pays tuition costs up to $8,000 per year, $4,000 for each semester, fall and spring.

The same budget also allowed for the creation of the Opportunity Scholarship program beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. This grant is awarded to low income families and provides a voucher system that pays up to $4,200 per year for private school tuition.

More detail regarding these grants can be found online at the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority website, Click “K-12 Grants” to see both programs listed then click through to see power point presentations for each.

If you are interested in speaking with someone at NIA to learn more about these programs, please feel free to request a meeting to talk with NIA parent liaison, Windy Amory.

Thank you for your interest in New Independence Academy. We look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards,

Dr. Kelly P. Alves Ed.D.

It is the goal of New Independence Academy to offer the best education at the most reasonable cost to our families. It is common among private school parents’ to make sacrifices for the specialized education and this sacrifice is most notable among special needs families.

First Year students: A non-refundable reservation fee of $600 is due with the completion of the entrance application. This fee will secure your child’s placement within the school. These funds will be applied to your last month’s tuition.

  • First month’s tuition, totaling $800 is due on or before August 1st.
  • Supplies – As a result of the unique needs of our children as well as the distinctive curriculum, additional supplies are necessary.  A one-time supply fee of $600 is required for new students. The supply fee covers additional materials, curriculum, and technical fees.
    • The supply fee is due on or before July 15th, allowing ample time for ordering.

Returning students: For the 2018-2019 school year, there will be a registration fee of $200 due for all returning students. This $200 fee will be due by June 1, 2018 to secure your child’s place for the 2018-2019 school year. If not paid by June 1, 2018, then an additional $100 fee will be applied. This fee is so that NIA can plan and have adequate teachers and staff for the upcoming school year. Students who have not paid the reservation fee are not guaranteed a slot for the upcoming school year.

  • The first month’s tuition payment of $800 is due on or before August 1st.
  • Annual Tuition:  $ 8000.00/year*
  • Additional programs: Tuition is based on a 10 month academic year. Any programs offered between June 15th and August 15th of each calendar year will incur an additional charge.

A completed application and updated IEP (if applicable) are required for review to be considered for acceptance. A diagnosis of High Functioning Autism (HFA), previously Asperger’s syndrome, is required for admission to New Independence Academy.
